In 1940, folk singer Woody Guthrie grew tired of hearing Kate Smith sing "God Bless America” on the radio because he thought it was smug and unrealistic. So he composed the lyrics to a song he called "God Blessed America”, which eventually becameThis Land is Your Land. The song was first recorded in 1944, and copyrighted in 1951. It was revived during the 1960’s and has been recorded by artists including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, and the Kingston Trio.
